Acupuncture for Downtown Edmonton

Acupuncture needles When one is looking for whole body healing, Acupuncture is a viable solution. With over 3000 years of history behind it, Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM is a great way to integrate mind, body and spirit into a cohesive whole to initiate the healing process.

Experience The Ancient Difference

TCM looks at the body in a different way than Conventional Western Medicine. Where as Western Medicine focuses in on a certain mechanism and uses pharmaceuticals to correct the problem, TCM looks at the body as a singular system; knowing that if one part begins to malfunction, that it will carry down the chain.

As a practitioner, we still address the concern, but our focus is always to find the root of the cause and heal it, so that the problem goes away and stays away.

The Energy System Of Your Body

Our bodies have streams of energy (also known as Qi), circulating around it, much like our cardiovascular system, called meridians. These Meridians are like rivers. When they are flowing freely, there is no problem, there is no pain. When there is a blockage in the stream, this is when friction begins to build and problems (or pain), occurs.

When you come in for a visit, I’ll ask you to fill out an extensive form. The reason it’s so long is so that we can see the ‘Big Picture’ of what’s going on inside. From there, I’ll use diagnostic methods such as Pulse and Tongue diagnosis to determine the cause of the disharmony and create a treatment plan to correct the issue. We can manage the symptoms as well as heal the root through different techniques such as, but not limited to:

  • acupuncture
  • cupping
  • gua sha
  • tui na massage
  • moxabustion

Typical questions that are asked are:

Does it hurt?

Generally, no. Sometimes other sensations are felt, like that of a dull ache, a warmth, an electric zap like a static shock, or sometimes nothing at all.

How long is a treatment and how many sessions will I need?

The first session will always be booked for one and a half hours, although it will not always go that long. The reasoning is so I can spend time learning about the client and their needs, make an accurate diagnosis and still get a full treatment in. After that, consequent visits are booked for an hour. As for the amount of treatments, that really depends on the case. Generally within 3-4 treatments, we should begin to see improvement. From there it can take up to 10 treatments to get back to 100%. Sometimes though, 10 treatments are not enough and we may need to extend. I will always use my best judgement and refer out if I feel Acupuncture is not the right course of action for you.

What is involved in a treatment?

Once we have gone over the intake and I have made my diagnosis and treatment plan, I use a modality, usually acupuncture, and then I let you relax in a warm and comfortable environment and allow the healing to begin. I check-in from time to time to make sure that you are doing okay still.

What will I feel after a treatment?

Again, everyone is different, sometimes you will feel instant relief, other times you will feel your symptoms get worse for a couple of days and then feel better; for the most part I see people come out of a treatment feeling calm and relaxed.

Getting To Know Nigel Bauer

Downtown Edmonton Acupuncturist Nigel Bauer

I’ve been practicing acupuncture going on four years, and am still enamoured everyday by it. My hope is to build a career specializing in Dermatology.

Acupuncture is a great way to heal acne, dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis. My main focus wanting to be treatment of acne. Growing up, I had problem skin and it wasn’t just the cosmetic nature behind it, but the mental and emotional health behind it. Skin diseases in TCM are almost always rooted in an internal imbalance.

I want to create healing on multiple levels; going through dietary therapy, as well as lifestyle therapy. That way you can be healthy and beautiful, inside and out. This is particularly true of our skin, being out largest organ, reflects the state of our internal workings. A glowing, healthy complexion , reflects a healthy internal system.

Beyond my passion of Acupuncture and overall health, I find it important to live life like that of a child; playfully and care-free, and I hope this reflects in my actions and character. Life is too short to be taken seriously and I’ve had my fair share of hardships in the short amount of time I’ve lived. Friends and family are important to me, as is continually building those relationships. That usually revolves around great food and wine, for that is what I like to do outside of work. And movies.
